Benefits of A Content Calendar
Kate started writing blog content back in 2010. She has been writing long-form blog content for years. She’s learned the ins and outs of writing content to go along with products, podcasts, and much more. When the Simple Pin Podcast started back in 2016, she made the intentional decision to accompany each episode with a blog post. That way she could optimize both pieces of content for Google and Pinterest.
Kate gets asked all the time if writing blog posts is necessary for marketing on Pinterest. The simple answer is yes. Having some long-form type of content, whether it’s a blog post or a YouTube video, shows better results on Pinterest. Pinners love it when they can see the bigger story. Whether it be for your own products or affiliates, you must have a content arm to make more sales.

Planning Out Your Content Calendar
Whether you are planning your Pinterest strategy or other social media strategies, you have to have a way to keep track of all of it. Kate suggests starting with a simple spreadsheet. Don’t overthink it. So start with a spreadsheet, add in dates, blog post or episode numbers, titles, keywords to target on Google and Pinterest, and any other relevant information. If you have a team, this helps keep all lines of communication open between the editor, the writer, and those doing SEO.
Now that you have a system in place, it’s time to execute. You need a place to gather ideas and plan for the future. At Simple Pin, we have planning meetings every quarter. If you don’t have a team, you can do these quarterly planning meetings by yourself.
These meetings are a great time to brainstorm new ideas, determine how you can better serve your followers, and plan out where you want to take things. From there, outline your show notes or blog posts. You don’t have to follow them to a T, but it’s important to know your end goal and a rough draft of how you want to get there. Make sure what you are producing is worth the time of your listener or reader.

Oftentimes, Kate likes to look at Pinterest analytics. Specifically, take a peak at the overview. This is where you’ll see how well your content is performing. You can see outbound clicks, saves, and engagement rates. These pieces of information can help you know where to go with your content. It shows you what people are interested in learning more about.
