So for the final podcast of the year, and the final part in our three-part series on content creation, let’s talk about how to use the Pinterest trends tool to create fresh content. But before we dive in, make sure to go back and listen/read part one and part two of the mini-series if you haven’t yet.
Using the Pinterest Trends Tool
In this episode, Kate takes on the perspective of someone who is content dry and needs fresh ideas. If you want a visual walkthrough, we have a YouTube video to accompany this episode.
The Pinterest Trends tool came out a couple of years ago. It’s been a game changer when it comes to finding new ideas and discovering what people are interested in. Especially if you are new to the Pinterest game, this tool is great for learning your audience and knowing if what you want to create is even being searched for by pinners.

Finding fresh content ideas with the Pinterest trends tool
Kate searches in the Pinterest trends tool for a few different keywords to see what populates and what is gaining traction on the platform. She ends up focusing on “business owner”. It lists other ideas related to that topic: “small business ideas for women”, “successful business”, and “business motivation”. When Kate clicks on one of those ideas, it takes her even deeper into popular pins.
So here Kate is trying to create the Simple Pin podcast calendar for the new year. When she clicks on “small business ideas for women”, it opens up a new Pinterest tab. What she sees are pins with titles like “six home businesses”, “21 profitable businesses”, and “16 legal documents you need”. Simple Pin doesn’t fit into any of those categories, but what Kate can take away is the use of numbers in those pin titles. The numbers are the biggest part of the Pinterest image. She even sees a few pins with 2022 or 2023, which she notes she would try to stay away from. Pins on Pinterest are evergreen. Meaning they never die and continue to circulate for years and years. So you ideally don’t want to date your pins to keep them applicable no matter the year.
Looking at the pins that populated, Kate determines she needs to create a listicle post. A post that lists out how to start an agency or build a business. Kate encourages that as you use the trends tool to research, start writing out ideas that come to mind for content. You could probably come up with 30 topics that all originated just from what you find on the trends tool.
The other thing to pay attention to when checking out the trends tool is what time of year topics are trending. In Kate’s case, starting a new business tends to trend in the new year as people are looking to start something new. So when you’re searching for something in your niche, make sure to look at time of year.

Get creative and Have Fun
It can be easy to get in a rut, and easy to produce the same content over and over again. Sometimes it takes shaking things loose to get more creative and think differently about some things. It’s no lie that content creation is hard. It is hard to come up with fresh ideas, and ideas that your audience will relate to. There is a lot of pressure on small business owners to do all the things, but we need to dial it back sometimes and focus on the creative process again. You want to make sure that the content you are sharing comes from a place of energy and excitement. You want to be excited about what you’re sharing so others can get excited about it too! People will be able to feel if you are depleted. That will seep through to the other side.
Avoid burnout and depletion when creating content, there are a few things you need to think about, especially as you dive into the trends tool:
- Take time to dream and find out what’s out there. Give yourself 30 minutes to an hour every quarter to explore, look around, get some ideas, and get inspired.
- Take all of those ideas that you have and figure out if it’s short or long form. Will it be written or a video?
- Take it one topic at a time. Don’t feel like you have to do it all at once. Taking it slow, you can bring your most energetic self into your content.
That’s it. Enjoy using the Trends tool to your advantage to help you discover what kind of content you need to create for your audience.
